There are literally hundreds of formal international standards covering all sorts of aspects from manufacturing to environmental impact. Some of these focus on best practice management systems. In addition, there are also formal and informal models and techniques for guiding you towards best practice. Here is a short-list of some of the most widely used and/or quoted:
tick bullet ISO 9000:2000 - Quality Management Systems
tick bullet ISO 14000 - Environmental Management Systems
tick bullet TQM - Total Quality Management
tick bullet Business Excellence Model
tick bullet Investors in People

The above ISO standards are generic guidelines that allow any organisation to design and implement management systems that are relevant to their organisation and ways of working. If your organisation feels that it can meet the requirements of the standard then it can apply to an accredited body for certification.

Analysis of the fundamentals of many successful business models will reveal a simple underlying philosophy:
KISS keep it simple stupid
In general, simple generic business models provide a useful framework upon which any organisation can build and benefit from. For any system to be implemented continually and successfully, it must be easy to understand and easy to apply.
