Real Innovation

We have already covered much of the theory of discovery, science, creativity and innovation in Previous Issues of the if++ Innovation Forum. Now we take a look at applied innovation, by focusing on topical issues and articles in the news. You can, however, also steer the course of if++ by voting on your chosen areas of interest and expressing your own views.

The article below uses elements of theory (covered earlier) to analyse real world innovations.

New Politics

New houses of parliament

In the news this week was the demise of IDS, the quiet leader of the Conservative Party. He claimed to have set new policies for the Party, and so in this issue we look at new ideas for politics in general.

Let us be honest, politics has changed very little, even since the introduction of UK parliament many years ago! The old historical houses of parliament reflects the ancient procedures still used in our political system . . . And what is all that nonsense with "Black Rod" banging on a door?

Oh I tell a lie, we have had a change: whilst telling tales as a politician still goes on - and is blindly accepted by society - we must now understand that politicians do not lie they simply "spin".

So why not innovate and take that issue out of the loop altogether by passing a law that makes all government information public - show us the statistics (all of them). This would help to make spin redundant. Or, why not make it a (criminal) offence for a politician to lie to the public or the media? Too harsh? Okay, let us say that any MP caught "spinning" loses their post.

Let us also be wise to the fact that our political system is not in fact democratic! Surprised by that statement? Well consider the facts: When did you actually have a say or vote on . . .

?
  • How much you should be taxed?
  • How much should be spent on education, education, education?
  • How many police should be on the streets?
  • The policy for asylum seekers?
  • How much should be spent on the arts and modern art?
  • What life-saving drugs should be available on the NHS?
  • Any political decision?

Just because you have a vote on which one of three, or so, local candidates gets to go to Westminster does not really mean you live in a democracy - does it?

A very small portion of creativity quickly leads us to a model for real democracy, in which all members of our society get the opportunity to both express their views and opinions, and to vote on actual political decisions - almost all political decisions. Now surely that is worthy of being called a democracy.

Oh and guess what? The introduction of the above means we no longer need MPs or Lords. In fact, this social model could be extended further . . . Bye bye fat cat lawyers and out of touch judges . . .

You may be thinking: Is this political model achievable? In terms of the technology, yes it is. Voting could be done via telephones and/or the Internet (along with some authentication and encryption technology to make things secure). The Internet also allow views and opinions to be expressed - heck people have been doing that on the Internet for several years (e.g. see: Newsgroups).

So what are we waiting for? When will societies of the 21st Century actually wake up and grab true democracy?
