Daring designsIf you are really innovating, to any significant degree, how do you go about . . . Getting a new design right? Design, like creativity, covers a vast range of topics, disciplines and applications. Firstly, we start with a quick reference to art, and then move on [in later pages] to other aspects of design.
ArtFirst the controversial statement - for some artists at any rate. Art at its basic fundamental level has a scientific element! [See an earlier issue for the definition of science.]At the level of human sensory perception, science can be used to understand some aspects of good practice. Or rather, science can identify aspects that are likely to result in poor art, or poor design, . . .
In this way, science can actually help to provide a set of guidelines to someone first attempting to learn art. They can learn what is potentially bad practice, and understand why. As we progress up the scale we get into the partly scientific territory of psychology, which may help to explain some additional characteristics of art. However, at the top [or bottom?] end of the scale, art relies on the emotional and apparently illogical characteristics of human behaviour. This also includes a significantly subjective attitude towards art. In some cases, these factors determine why some like a particular work of art, or a design, while others almost hate it. At this level there are other intangible and sometimes illogical factors. Rather than enter the eternal debates on "what is art", here is list of keywords for you to mull over: culture, society, groups, fashion, trends, prestige, pride, insecurity, brand, gullibility, pleasure, pleasant, beauty, relaxing, happy, wonderful, and feel good factor. And finally, art is a wonderful thing that has the potential to enrich our lives! Footnote:
